Beth and John from The Arc in Caterham, where we rehearsed A Midsummer Night's Dream last sumer telling us why your Christmas party should be there! Stagescripts, the theatrical rights holder and publisher have combined with A Stage Kindly, the musical theatre producers to create The NEW MUSICAL SONGBOOK, which offers sheet music and backing tracks from NEW pieces of musical theatre for use in Cabaret or auditions or simply to buy and sing. Visit here to peruse new material.
Andy Rapps and Chris Chambers have been developing the script and score of Gulliver's Travels since this video demo was recorded of a local amateur company's production at the Minack Theatre, Cornwall - but the scope of the show remains the same. And yet - though it looks like it would be a massive task to put on a show like this, actually - it is not - simple ideas and theatrical conventions create the sense of big and small - the audience's imaginations are challenged to work and effects do not make or break the show - storytelling is the key. Of course it helps having the Atlantic ocean as a backdrop!
An excellent conference and an opportunity to discuss how Mercury Musical Developments and Musical Theatre Network are using their funding to encourage new musical theatre writers throughout the country. It is a very exciting time for musical theatre and an opportunity for subsidised and commercial sectors to join forces in creating a community of theatre practitioners for the future.
The conference was introduced by Laurie Sansom and Mark Shenton lead a fascinating interview with with Phelim McDermott, who described the importance of creating a safe atmosphere in a rehearsal room in order to 'play' and really develop a piece - how the danger is that the first good idea becomes set in stone too early - when the process needs to keep evolving. Also, the importance of accepting the danger, the fear of the process and not allowing that fear to lead creative decisions - how producers need to recognise the financial gambles and be prepared to accept that it is a gamble, without impacting negatively on a rehearsal process. True. Panellists were from a number of different platforms - Kerry Michael (AD of Stratford East) Adam Cork (composer of London Road) - Lotte Wakeham (Associate Director on Mathilde), Dougal Irvine (writer of Departure Lounge), Andy Barnes (Perfect Pitch), Elliott Davis (writer of Loserville), Niraj Chag (Buzz-Erk Music), Simon Greiff (Director), Louise Blackwell (Fuel), James Brining (West Yorkshire Playhouse) - the list goes on. It really was a well attended conference and following an amazing concert on Sunday night, it felt that for the first time in decades there really is a creative community working together to develop new musical theatre in this country - and that things will grow from this initiative. Following the success of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Another Way Theatre have been asked by The Caterham & Purley Festivals to produce another site specific summer Shakespeare for the community. But which Shakespeare is your favourite? Which play would you like to see? We have our ideas but it would be good to hear yours. If you would like to put your favourite Shakespeare forward, please fill in the form below. The photo by Marcus Ascott shows things getting on top of Andy Fitch (Demetrius), Glyn Williams (Lysander) and Elaine Hartley (Hermia) in Another Way Theatre's outdoor production of A Midsummer Night's Dream 2011.
