So there it is - all done. Pictured are the cast at Middle Temple Hall over the weekend, where we performed Twelfth Night to a healthy number of people. The whole experience was fantastic and it was a privilege to bring Twelfth Night to life in the venue where it began it's journey back in 1602. Watching the show in that space verged on the metaphysical at times. There were moments and lines in the show that spoke louder than in other venues. It should be remembered that Shakespeare wrote Twelfth Night in quite a hurry, borrowing ideas from previous productions - and the text appears to have been specifically geared towards the Middle Temple fraternity. There are frequent referrals to matters of law and The Middle Temple Hall is described accurately in some detail - "bay windows as transparent as barricadoes and the clerestories to the south-north are as lustrous as ebony..." Performing our version of Twelfth Night in that space made us feel like we were close to Mr. Shakespeare himself. A fascinating experience, a cast that gave their all - a pleasure to watch. Thank you to everyone involved and all those who came to support us. Sell-out shows at Hoxton so far. Still some tickets for Thursday night. The production suits this venue incredibly well. The atmosphere was great last night and the cast rose to the occasion. Because of the depth of the playing space at Hoxton we have been able to adjust some of the scenes and create vivid atmospheres. Malvolio being taunted by Feste was particularly moving last night. And Alexis Jayne Defoe has done amazingly well - taking over the role of Viola at incredibly short notice from Kristal Sisodia, who had to pull out of the production at The Space due to illness. The show has gone from strength to strength and I am looking forward to the rest of the run and the transfer to Middle Temple Hall.
What a venue! Today we got in to Hoxton Hall having left The Space behind - must say it was a pleasure to work at The Space - the management, volunteers (and bar staff in the Hubbub restaurant) were all consistently helpful and friendly. Massive thanks to Adam and Alex for all their encouragement. And with two sell out shows to finish off our run there, it has proved to be a good experience. So today was spent revisioning the set and lighting in a new space - Hoxton Hall. It is a magical place, sadly underused for theatre. Lizzy's set fits more naturally in here - and with three levels to act on and a billowing sail to project onto, it looks like the production will be a memorable one. A fantastic show last night - totally sold out - a great atmosphere. With added touches from the actors, clearly inspired by the response, the show came alive. An upliftingday. Prior to the evening performance we visited Middle Temple Hall to firm up how we are going to stage the show there. It truly is a magnificent building. I searched the walls for the arms of Thomas Greene, who was Shakespeare's "cousin". I found it tucked away round the corner - the date 1600 - I love this place!
The actors are going to have to slum it a little as their dressing room will be The Queens Room. It is great that Another Way Theatre have been given the opportunity to perform here at Middle Temple Hall. But before that we have Hoxton Hall - another venue brimming with history... |
